From its botanical name, Smilax, Sarsaparilla comes from the Liliaceae plant family. It is grown in tropical rainforests and in temperate regions in Asia and Australia and its roots are gathered throughout the year. Its physicial nature is woody or thorny and it can climb up to 15 feet with broad leaves, green tendrils, and small green flowers.
It is believed that ancient Peruvians were the first to recognize Sarsaparilla’s pain-relieving properties, and used it as a treatment for headaches, joint pain and ailments associated with colds and flu.
Sarsaparilla has a taste profile similar to the flavors of wintergreen, vanilla, and licorice.
